Electric Networked Vehicle zero-emission hybrid concept

Planet friendly and really green - could an automaker achieve things like these? Oh yes, why not? The vision has been there all along. General Motor's EN-V, short for Electric Networked Vehicle, showed the urge to not interfere with environment in a bad manner. The Porsche 918 Spyder, too showed the way. Then, Swiss car company Mindset came out with its zero-emission hybrid concept. Now, it is 2020 Chevrolet Era project, designed by Yana Briggs of Lithuanian origin, a graduate of Art Center College of Design, much thought has been given to the project before finalizing a design for the eco friendly car.

The Chevrolet Era would have a 2+2 design and would carry its solar panels on the roof. Nicknamed the 'Cleaner' by its designer, the Era works on power gathered at its concave spherical surface. One has to understand that the concave surface has been designed with specific intention to trap maximum power for the vehicle from the sun. Its headlights double up as indicators of the panel charging process. Now, let us move to the Era's interiors.
The internals too, are quite thoughtful. The car is designed to save the one behind the wheel from that polluted air. It uses an O2 filter exhaust. The system renews oxygen for the riders at programmed intervals. The Era has been designed to kill. It boasts of diamond jewellery inspired headlights. These have been detailed very minutely to give the young Yana a chance to compete for the coming World Solar Challenge. That aside, she is presently busy also designing the 2022 Alfa Romeo Mode Concept car.

American obese / obese car

Chevrolet Corvette ZR
A few years ago we reported on the trend that many new cars aren't designed to accommodate America's seemingly ever-expanding waistline, with even popular models like the Chevrolet Corvette ill-prepared to carry two occupants each with a weight of over 200 pounds.

Alarmingly, it's not just sporty coupes and roadsters that can't handle the increased girth of their grocery-getting governors either. Minivans, SUVs/crossovers, and sedans are all skimping on approved passenger weights. Examples include the previous generation Acura TSX, which seats five people, as long as their average weight doesn't exceed 170 pounds, and the Mazda CX-7, which sports similar specifications.

But could it be the car itself that's causing the obesity epidemic?

According to a new study from researchers at the University of Illinois, America's love of the car has a direct correlation--99 percent in fact--with obesity rates. Researchers looked at annual vehicle miles traveled per licensed driver from the 1985 to 2007 and found that the more we drove, the heavier as a nation we became.

And it's not just America where the trend is occurring. Pretty much anywhere where there is increased car use, obesity rates rise. To prove this researchers looked at India and China where a lot of the population are just starting to adopt car use and they discovered similar trends.

The solution? We're sure you already guessed that one: drive less and walk more. However, with this country's urban sprawl and lack of suitable public transport, the chances of the average American driver leaving their car at home on their next outing are next-to-nil.

Lasers and Electro-Optics / laser spark plug

Spark plugs, which have hardly changed in 150 years since they were invented, as we know them, could be sent for a revolutionary change
Lasers could soon replace spark plugs in cars to make engines greener, according to researchers.
Experts from from Romania and Japan will reveal their findings - that inexpensive lasers could ignite the fuel-air mixture in combustion engines - at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics in Baltimore next month.
The team, who are believed to be in talks with a spark plug manufacturer, will speak about their studies on May 1 and it could revolutionise the efficiency of vehicle engines.
The revolutionary approach would - in theory - reduce their pollution, by igniting more of the mixture.
Spark plugs are used to ignite the fuel mixture near the spark gap, reducing the combustion efficiency.

One of the biggest drawbacks of the spark plug is that and the metal that they are manufactured with slowly erodes as they age.
Many other people have tried to replace the spark plug - an object which has not really changed since it was invented a century and a half ago - with lasers.
Unfortunately inventors found that the lasers needed to do the job of the spark plug would be cumbersome, inefficient and unstable.

However, the team believe that they have now developed a system that can focus two or even three laser beams into an engine's cylinders at variable depths.
This development increases the completeness of combustion while also avoiding the issue of erosion.
On the minus side it does, however, require lasers of high pulse energies - so, as with spark plugs, a considerable amount of energy is needed in order to ignite fuel.

Takunori Taira of the National Institutes of Natural Sciences in Okazaki, Japan, told the BBC: 'In the past, lasers that could meet those requirements were limited to basic research because they were big, inefficient, and unstable.
'Nor could they be located away from the engine, because their powerful beams would destroy any optical fibres that delivered light to the cylinders.'
In addition the team has been trying to make the lasers out of ceramic powders that are pressed into cylinders which are a similar size to spark plugs.
The ceramic devices are lasers in their own right and gather energy from compact, lower-power lasers.

The scientists have found that unlike the delicate crystals which are usually used in high-power lasers, the ceramics are stronger and can withstand the heat better within combustion engines.
They are currently in talks about commercialising the technology with Denso, a leading automobile component manufacturer.

BMW Wahnsinn concept motorcycle

The BMW Wahnsinn ('insanity' in German) was a 2003 concept motorcycle designed by Jiro Arborgh.

The BMW Wahnsinn is a fuel cell powered motorbike intended for the urban rider. Its design is intended to highlight advanced technology, while retaining the essence of conventional motorcycles.

The BMW Wahnsinn is an attractive concept which uses an unusual, single-sided, hub-centre steering system. The bodywork, seat and engine cover has a sleek and clean appearance which hides the majority of the mechanical elements. At the rear of the BMW Wahnsinn concept, the innovative brake light wraps around the single, central-exit exhaust.

The Wahnsinn concept was developed with assistance from designers at BMW Motorrad.

improve battery performance / performance car batteries

Scientists are coming up with new software that would help speed up the process of development of future electric cars.

Lack of charging stations and limited battery life have so far prevented compact electric vehicles from going mainstream.

The lithium-ion batteries used by most automakers are simply too heavy, too expensive and go flat too quickly.

New materials should improve the performance, service life and safety of the energy storage device, yet the development of these kinds of materials is time-consuming and costly.

But now researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM in Kaiserslautern are developing software to simulate lithium-ion batteries, which should in turn speed up this process and make it more efficient.

The new software is dubbed BEST , short for Battery and Electrochemistry Simulation Tool.

The researchers have managed to simulate on macroscopic and microscopic level the entire battery cell as well as the transport and reaction processes of the lithium ions themselves.

"W
e can show the microscopic structure of the electrodes. Every individual pore measuring 10 micrometers can be seen - something none of today's off-the-shelf programs can do. The position and shape of the electrodes can also be varied," said Zausch.

By resolving the structure of the electrodes in three dimensions, parameters such as lithium ion concentrations and current density can be calculated.

For these computations a specialize "Finite Volume" code is used that was developed and implemented at the ITWM.

The distribution of the current flow provides an indication of heat production in the battery. Therefore, the software can pinpoint possible hotspots that may overheat and can lead to ignition of the battery. Aging effects can also be assessed using BEST.

Italy in manufacturing electric cars

Car manufacturers are now caught up in the scramble for the development of fuel efficient vehicles with the ideal of an electric car that overcomes the obstacles it has faced to date. A beacon of hope on the horizon is the new electric vehicle from the Italian car design Tazzari Group dubbed the "Zero" which will make its debut at the Bologna International Motor Show in December 2009. The estimated launch price should be less than €20,000 per unit.

Distribution in the United States is anticipated to begin early in 2010 through the exclusive agency of Verdek-EV. The Tazzari brand will focus their energy on the manufacture of small electric vehicles and is located in the same region of Italy as Ferrari and Lamborghini.

The Tazzari Zero is a NEV (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle) that operates on lithium-ion batteries with an outstanding range of 88 miles between recharging for less than $2. The use of lithium-ion batteries is the ideal power source for a NEV; the batteries have an estimated life of 50,000 miles and can be recharged in as little as 50 minutes (at 80% of the full charge) with optional Super-fast battery charger.
In addition to battery electric vehicles or BEVs and other alternate-fueled vehicles, the Neighborhood Electric Vehicles are considered to vital to the 40% of the world driving population that travels less than 40 miles per day. The Tazzari Zero NEVs is poised to fill this critical niche of for local transportation demands.

The Tazzari ZERO is a unique micro-car for more reasons than excellent mileage per charge; the sporty, aluminum-bodied car delivers zero emissions and will be electronically limited to a maximum speed of 25-45 mph (depending on State regulations) although it has the capability to reach a top speed of 56 mph.

In keeping with the Italian car tradition of making driving an adventure, the focus on protecting the environment did not detract from the number of creature features to make time in the vehicle a safe and pleasurable experience; performance disc brakes at each corner, a removable sunroof, heating and air conditioning, stereo radio with MP3 and CD player, 15" custom colored wheels, fog lamps, with a leather steering wheel and seats. Surprisingly the Tazzari Zero micro-car has a payload of 430 pounds and a luggage capacity of nearly six cu. ft.

It makes sense that this vehicle is being created in the historic region where some of the best known names in exotic and luxury cars. The Emilia Romagna based Tazzari manufacturer is committed to the production of an innovative, stylish and upscale micro-car for the environmentally concerned urban enthusiast.

The company has a reputation as one an Italian producer in pursuit of excellence. With a history of 45 years of growth, plus investment and diversification, today the quest to bring the very best of technology and manufacturing to electric cars to make the "Made in Italy" register on these vehicles as respected as on conventional fuel cars. Today this dynamic company is headed by Erik and Rafael Tazzari who present the Zero as an electric city car with unrivalled urban mobility concept that uses a superb Italian blend of technology and design as its answer to the issue of sustainability.

To the joy of millions of drivers, the Tazzari Zero brings the ownership of an electric car to the level of desire and passion. This breakthrough will allow driver to have an environmentally responsible car, that's a kick to drive as well.

For more reasons than can be listed here, the Tazzari Zero represents a radical shift in the way electric cars are viewed. With the keyword as sustainability, here is a reasonable priced car that conquers the major objections that have plagued its predecessors.

The evolution of technology and the creative design team at Tazzari have conceived ZERO to be a truly ecological alternative to current mobility. The Tazzari Zero is the meeting point of two perspectives: sport performance and protection for the environment that is a genuine innovation that allows drivers to make a clean break from the past without compromising performance or an exorbitant price tag.

The Tazzari Group was equally concerned with using technological choices that favor the environment, as with the objective of creating a vehicle that remained true to the Italian passion for sporty performance. At its heart, the Tazzari Zero is an Italian thoroughbred. The company was founded by Giorgio Tazzari in 1963. The company has evolved become one of the most respected Italian manufacturing firms for machine work, advanced engineering, aluminum casting, subcontracting and assembly in the service sector. With the introduction of the Tazzari Zero in December 2009 and its distribution starting a few months later, motorists who travel short distances on a daily basis will no longer have to sacrifice personal satisfaction with the vehicle they choose to drive in order to reduce carbon emissions. The best of both worlds in personal transportation has definitely arrived, thanks to the Tazzari Zero.

volvo active at all speeds

After decades of residential speeding campaigns, one car manufacturer has finally pulled out all the stops.

Volvo has developed a pedestrian detection system that automatically brakes a car to a halt whenever someone steps out in front of it.
Designed to save lives on urban streets, the 'support function' kicks in at speeds of up to 22mph, although the technology 'is active at all speeds'.

It works by using radar and camera technology to watch out for other vehicles and pedestrians ahead of the car.
Should a collision be imminent, an audible warning is made to alert the driver, and if there is no response the car is immediately brought to an emergency stop.
The system doesn't work at night or in poor weather, and Volvo is quick to point out that 'it is always the driver that is responsible for driving safely'.
Fourteen per cent of all those killed in car accidents in Europe are pedestrians; this figure stands at 11 per cent in the U.S.
The Swedish car manufacturer estimates that its detection system would reduce the number of pedestrians killed by more than 20 per cent, while the number of those seriously injured would fall by almost 30 per cent.
In a further 30 per cent of incidents, a collision would be entirely avoided, Volvo said.
The system is an optional extra in the Volvo XC60, S60 and V60.
The collision warning system is also programmed to react if the vehicle in front is at a standstill or is moving in the same direction.

Lamborghini Ankonian Concept by designer Slavche Tanevsky. This Ankonian has more aggressive design, a narrow and rather complex-looking body, with a garnishing of GT proportions.
The Lamborghini Ankonian design study consists of a slimmer body style with a mid-engine mount and sharp angles. Special OLEDs are embedded between surfaces to serve as headlights. The name for the Ankonian comes from a bull famous for its black hair. Even though Slavche Tanevsky is an independent designer, this is no simple pipe dream.
According to the Munich University of Applied Sciences student, he brought style Lamborghini Reventon to the next level - more otvyazny and aggressive, but at the same time elegant and harmonious.

Toyota and Tesla future of electric cars

Well, it looks like Toyota and Tesla  have just teamed up to bring in the future of electric cars. After making a $50 million investment in Tesla, the joint company will use an auto-assembly line they've purchased in California to pump out the vehicles. the collaboration will include the production of the vehicles, parts, and engineering support. The news of the partnership was leaked by Governor Schwarzeneggar while he was visiting Google's headquarters. Tesla had originally been in talks to take over an old NASA  manufacturing facility. Check out more on the story over at Tree Hugger
[tesla-car+2.jpg]The Tesla Roadster is a battery electric vehicle (BEV) sports car produced by the electric car firm Tesla Motors. The Roadster is one of the few highway-capable electric automobiles for sale to the public in 2010,and Tesla delivered around 900 cars to customers in the United States and Europe by December 2009,with production reaching 1,000 cars in January 2010.
The Roadster is the first production automobile to use lithium-ion battery cells and the first production BEV (all-electric) to travel more than 200 miles (320 km) per charge. The world distance record of 501 km (311 mi) for a production electric car on a single charge was set by a Roadster on October 27, 2009 during the Global Green Challenge in outback Australia. The Roadster was developed by Tesla Motors to mass produce AC Propulsion's tzero concept car. The production idea was conceived by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning who were then joined by financier Elon Musk; Musk currently (2009) serves as Tesla's Chairman, CEO and Product Architect.
He has said that he aimed to incorporate touches from his two favorite kinds of cars—Porsche and McLaren.British sports car maker Lotus helped with basic chassis development. The Roadster has a parts overlap of roughly 6 percent with the Lotus Elise. Tesla's designers chose to construct the body panels using resin transfer molded carbon fiber composite to minimize weight; this choice makes the Roadster one of the least expensive cars with an entirely carbon fiber skin.
Initially, Tesla Motors licensed AC Propulsion's EV Power System design and Reductive Charging patent which covers integration of the charging electronics with the inverter, thus reducing mass, complexity, and cost. Tesla Motors then designed and built its own power electronics, motor, and other drivetrain components that incorporated this licensed technology from AC Propulsion.Given the extensive redevelopment of the vehicle, Tesla Motors no longer licenses any proprietary technology from AC Propulsion. The Roadster's powertrain is unique.

Several prototypes of the Tesla Roadster were produced from 2004 through 2007. Initial studies were done in two "test mule" vehicles based on Lotus Elises equipped with all-electric drive systems. Ten Engineering Prototypes (EP1 through EP10) which led to many minor changes were then built and tested in late 2006 and early 2007. Tesla then produced at least 26 Validation Prototypes (VP1 through VP26) which were delivered beginning in March, 2007. These final revisions were endurance and crash tested in preparation for series production.
The company has been shipping cars to European customers since the summer of 2009. An EU special-edition vehicle is limited to a 2010 model-year production run of 250 cars, with a base price of €99,000.Tesla opened a showroom in London, its first outside the US, on June 25, 2009, and announced at the same time that it would start building right-hand-drive models from early 2010.
Tesla opened a store in Munich in September 2009 and a store in Monaco in November 2009. Reservations for the 2010 Roadster are available for a 3,000 Euro refundable reservation fee.
http://www.hdwallpapers.in/walls/tesla_roadster_sports_car-wide.jpg
Tesla Motors refers to the Roadster's battery pack as the Energy Storage System or ESS. The ESS contains 6,831 lithium ion cells arranged into 11 "sheets" connected in series; each sheet contains 9 "bricks" connected in series; each "brick" contains 69 cells connected in parallel (11S 9S 69P). The cells are 18 mm (0.71 in) in diameter and 65 mm (2.6 in) long (18650 form-factor); this type of lithium-ion cell is also found in most laptop computer batteries. The pack is designed to prevent catastrophic cell failures from propagating to adjacent cells, even when the cooling system is off. Coolant is pumped continuously through the ESS both when the car is running and when the car is turned off if the pack retains more than a 90% charge. The coolant pump draws 146 watts.
A full recharge of the battery system requires 3½ hours using the High Power Connector which supplies 70 amp, 240 volt electricity; in practice, recharge cycles usually start from a partially charged state and require less time. A fully charged ESS stores approximately 53 kWh of electrical energy at a nominal 375 volts and weighs 992 lb (450 kg).
Tesla Motors stated in February 2009 that the current replacement cost of the ESS is slightly under USD$36,000, with an expected life span of 7 years/100,000 mi (160,000 km), and began offering owners an option to pre-purchase a battery replacement for USD$12,000 today with the replacement to be delivered after seven years. The ESS is expected to retain 70% capacity after 5 years and 50,000 miles (80,000 km) of driving (10,000 miles (16,000 km) driven each year). Tesla Motors provides a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty on the Roadster with an optional 4 year/50,000 mile extended warranty available at an "additional cost" (2008 Roadster buyers received the 4/50 extension at no cost while later purchasers need to pay). A non-ESS warranty extension is available for USD$5,000 and adds another 3/36 to the coverage of components, excluding the ESS, for a total of 6 years/72,000 mi (120,000 km).
Tesla Motors announced plans to sell the battery system to TH!NK and possibly others through its Tesla Energy Group division. The TH!NK plans were put on hold by interim CEO Michael Marks in September, 2007.

Indian solar cities by 2020

At least 60 Indian cities will be solar powered by 2020 if India is able to generate 20,000 MW of solar energy by then, said Mark Ginberg, Senior Official with the U.S. Department of Energy.

The U.S. Department of Energy and the All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG) launched a joint training programme on 'Energy efficient and green cities' in Goa, which will train Indian experts, universities, local self governments and civic bodies on getting cities to move to solar powered energy, reports the Times of India.

"Twenty cities in India have already been lined up for this programme and they will be partnered with cities in the U.S. for moving towards this objective," said Ginberg, who is the Senior Executive Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, U.S. Department of Energy.

According to an initial list of partnered Indo-U.S. cities, Ahmedabad has been tied up with Atlanta and Columbus; Bangalore with San Francisco; Chennai with Denver, Delhi with Chicago, Mumbai with Los Angeles and Surat with Philadelphia.

"This tie-up will enable Indian institutions such as schools to study energy-smart schools in the U.S. and implement the same here, if they wish to do so," said Vatsal Bhatt, Co-ordinator of U.S., India and China city partnership for sharing best practices in energy and environment.

Union Minister of State for Power Bharatsinh Solanki said that the country could make use of its open fields and rooftops of houses to harness solar energy and water harvesting. "Delhi is already considering to set up an energy efficiency board. Nuclear energy will the answer in the future, even thorium techniques could be utilized. However, in India, we have financial constraints," he said.

The marques which were originally all based in Saxony - Audi and Horch in Zwickau, Wanderer in Chemnitz-Siegmar and DKW in Zschopau - made a significant contribution to the progress of the automotive industry in Germany. These four marques merged in 1932 to form Auto Union AG. In terms of the sheer number of vehicles built, this was the second-largest German motor vehicle company of its day. Four interlinked rings were adopted as its marque emblem. After the Second World War, Auto Union AG's production plant in Saxony was expropriated and dismantled by the occupying Soviet forces.

A number of the company's senior managers departed for Bavaria, where a new company under the name of Auto Union GmbH was founded in 1949 in Ingolstadt, upholding the motor vehicle tradition under the sign of the four rings.

Auto Union GmbH and NSU merged in 1969 to form Audi NSU Auto Union AG; this the company was renamed AUDI AG in 1985 and its headquarters transferred to Ingolstadt. The four rings remains the company's emblem to this day.

his is designer Bruno Delussu's rendition of the Bugatti Stratos Concept car.

"The overall shape of the Stratos was inspired by the streamlined design of the highly-prized Bugatti Type 57, produced from 1934 – 1940, while the front end contains design references to the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Mille Miglia. Rounding out the mix is a touch of the “futuristic optimism” of industrial designer Raymond Loewy’s (1893 – 1986) gorgeous Art Deco steam locomotives," JamesList reports.
